Kandil Cascades
INSTALLATION DESIGN • MATERIAL INNOVATION • LIGHTING DESIGN
THE TAJ MAHAL PALACE, MUMBAI | 2023 & 2024
The installation brief was to infuse the festive spirit of Diwali into their entrance lobby this year. Their objective was to create an installation that harmonized with the reception area's aesthetics, serving as a picturesque focal point while also showcasing curated gift hampers.

Inspired by traditional kandils (Indian lanterns), the design celebrated the essence of Diwali through intricate, handcrafted forms. Each lantern was meticulously folded from specially designed paper, showcasing detailed origami artistry. In soft pastel tones, the kandils blended effortlessly into the lobby's neutral palette, casting a gentle glow that reflected off the surrounding glass—evoking the poetic imagery of lanterns drifting over still water. The ambient lighting added a layer of quiet celebration, allowing the space to feel festive without overwhelming its elegance.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the installation became a point of engagement for guests and visitors, drawing them in with its tranquil presence. It offered a seamless setting to showcase the Taj Mahal Palace's curated Diwali hampers, encouraging exploration and interaction during the gifting experience. By merging cultural symbolism with immersive design, the installation successfully captured the spirit of Diwali while evolving across two festive seasons to become a memorable part of the hotel's celebratory identity.
